Phonics at Home: A Simple Guide for Parents of Kindergartners

What phonics is, how schools teach it, and simple 5-minute activities and games to help your kindergartner or Reception child learn to read at home.

If your child has just started kindergarten, Reception or Foundation, you will hear a lot about phonics. It can sound technical, but the idea is simple โ€” and you donโ€™t need to be a teacher to help.

What is phonics?

Phonics teaches children that letters (and groups of letters) stand for sounds, and that we can blend those sounds together to read words: /c/ /a/ /t/ โ†’ cat. Most schools in the United States, United Kingdom, Canada and Australia now teach reading this way, usually starting with the most common single sounds and moving on to pairs like sh, ch and th.

Listening comes first

Before children can match letters to sounds, they need to hear the sounds inside words. That skill โ€” called phonemic awareness โ€” is what most at-home practice should focus on at first. You can build it anywhere, with no screen and no letters at all:

  • I Spy with sounds: โ€œI spy something beginning with /b/.โ€ Say the sound, not the letter name.
  • Rhyme time: read rhyming books and pause so your child can fill in the rhyme.
  • Robot talk: say words in sounds โ€” โ€œCan you find your /h/ /a/ /t/?โ€ โ€” and let your child blend them.
  • Clap the beats: clap the syllables in names: Ol-i-ver, A-va.

Say sounds, not letter names

The single most helpful thing parents can do is say letter sounds the way school does: a short โ€œsssโ€ for s, not โ€œessโ€; โ€œmmmโ€ for m, not โ€œemโ€. Avoid adding โ€œuhโ€ to the end (โ€œbuhโ€, โ€œtuhโ€) where you can โ€” clipped sounds blend more easily.

A 5-minute routine that works

  1. One listening game (1โ€“2 minutes): I Spy, rhyming, or robot talk.
  2. One short phonics game (2โ€“3 minutes): Sound Safari says a word aloud and asks for its first sound, then its last sound, then the middle vowel.
  3. One real book (as long as you both enjoy it): point to words now and then, but mostly just enjoy the story.

Games that support phonics

On Bloomy Games, every word is spoken aloud, so the game models the sounds for your child. Rhyme Time builds rhyming, Alphabet Balloons practises recognising letters, and Spell Bee at its first level has children build three-letter words sound by sound โ€” the reverse of reading, which strengthens both.

Signs your child is on track

  • They can tell you the first sound in a word you say.
  • They notice when words rhyme (and enjoy silly rhymes).
  • They start recognising letters in their name and on signs.
  • By the end of kindergarten or Year 1, they can blend short words like sun, map and hop.

Every child moves at their own pace. If you have concerns โ€” for example, your child finds it very hard to hear rhymes or first sounds by age 6 โ€” mention it to their teacher. Early support makes a big difference.
