Addition games for kids
Quick, confident addition is the foundation for almost everything else in math (or maths). These games start with small numbers and pictures, then build up to adding within 20 and two-digit sums as your child gets more answers right.
Games are short — a few minutes each — and levels adjust automatically, so practice stays just challenging enough.
3 games that practise addition
What your child practises
- Adding within 10 and within 20
- Two-digit sums
- Addition in word problems
- Adding coins to find a total
When do children learn this?
Adding within 10 in kindergarten / Reception, within 20 in grade 1 / Year 1–2, and two-digit addition by grade 2–3 / Year 3.
How to help at home
- Learn “number bonds” to 10 (7 + 3, 6 + 4…) — they make bigger sums easy.
- Encourage counting on from the bigger number instead of counting everything.
- Use real objects first, then pictures, then just numbers.
Addition questions from parents
Which addition game should my child start with?
Rocket Math starts at adding within 10 and moves up to two-digit sums. Children ready for words can try Story Sums; money-lovers enjoy Coin Counter.
Should my child use their fingers?
Yes, early on — fingers are a natural tool. With practice, facts become memorised and fingers fade away. Speed comes from understanding, not pressure.
