Spelling games for kids
Spelling is reading in reverse: children hear a word and build it from sounds and letters. Practising it makes reading stronger too. Words start with simple three-letter words and progress to blends, digraphs and common tricky words.
Our spelling game
What your child practises
- Three-letter (CVC) words
- Blends and digraphs (like sh, ch, st)
- Common tricky words
When do children learn this?
Short words in kindergarten–grade 1 (Reception–Year 1); blends and digraphs in grades 1–2; irregular and longer words through grades 3–6.
How to help at home
- Say the word slowly and stretch the sounds together before spelling.
- For tricky words, point out the tricky part and learn just that bit.
- Praise good tries — invented spellings show your child is listening to sounds.
