Reading comprehension games
Comprehension is the point of reading: understanding what happened, why, and what the writer didn’t say outright. These short detective stories build all three levels, from finding facts to reading between the lines.
Our reading comprehension game
What your child practises
- Finding facts in a text
- Explaining why something happened
- Inference: reading between the lines
- Vocabulary from context
When do children learn this?
Retelling and fact questions from grades 1–2; “why” questions and inference through grades 3–6 (Years 3–7).
How to help at home
- Ask “What do you think will happen next?” while reading together.
- After reading, ask one “why” question rather than lots of fact questions.
- Let children read what they love — comics and non-fiction count.
Reading comprehension questions from parents
What’s a good comprehension game for 8 year olds?
Story Detective starts with finding facts and moves to “why” questions and inference, with read-aloud help on every question.
