Phonics games for kindergarten and early readers
Phonics teaches children that letters stand for sounds and that sounds blend into words. It’s how most children learn to read in the US, UK, Canada and Australia. These games train the listening skills underneath: hearing the first sound in a word, then the last, then the tricky middle vowel.
Every word is spoken aloud, so the game does the modelling. Read our phonics at home guide.
3 games that practise phonics
What your child practises
- Beginning sounds
- Ending sounds
- Middle (vowel) sounds
- Spelling short words sound by sound
When do children learn this?
Beginning sounds in pre-K and kindergarten (Reception / Foundation), blending and middle sounds in grades K–2 (Years 1–2). UK children take the Phonics Screening Check in Year 1.
How to help at home
- Say sounds, not letter names: “sss” for s, not “ess”.
- Play I Spy with sounds: “I spy something beginning with /m/.”
- Keep it short and playful — five minutes a day works.

Phonics questions from parents
What are the best phonics games for kindergarten?
Start with Sound Safari for beginning sounds, Rhyme Time for rhyming, and Spell Bee at the first level for three-letter words.
Do the games use American or British pronunciation?
Words are spoken by your device’s built-in voice, and Bloomy Games picks the English that matches your device’s region — for example English (UK), English (Canada) or English (Australia) — whenever that voice is installed. Otherwise it uses US English.
