Counting games for preschool and kindergarten

Counting is more than saying numbers in order. Children need to touch each object once, know that the last number tells “how many”, and see that 5 is 5 however the items are arranged. These games practise all three with things kids love — fruit, critters and baskets.

Every instruction is read aloud, so even children who can’t read yet can play on their own.

2 games that practise counting

What your child practises

  • One-to-one counting (one tap or drag per object)
  • Counting to 10, then to 20
  • Comparing groups: more and fewer
  • Adding one more to a group

When do children learn this?

Usually ages 3–6: pre-K and kindergarten in the US and Canada, Nursery and Reception in the UK, Kindy and Foundation in Australia.

How to help at home

  • Count everyday things out loud: stairs, grapes, socks going into the wash.
  • Ask “how many?” after counting — the last number is the answer, and that idea takes practice.
  • Mix up arrangements: 5 coins in a line and 5 in a pile are still 5.

Counting questions from parents

What counting games are best for a 4 year old?

Fruit Basket is designed for the youngest players: drag fruit into a basket while each number is spoken. Next, try Count the Critters.

My child can count to 20 but gets the wrong answer when counting objects. Why?

Reciting numbers and counting objects are different skills. Children often skip or double-count items. Drag-and-drop counting helps because each object moves once — a physical reminder of one-to-one counting.
